Gunnamatta ocean beach

We obviously fell in love with the beaches and I will talk at length about the various beaches along the mornington peninsula. There are many to fall in love with.We have a dog and love swimming so we would venture to many of the beaches. Our favourite is the Gunnamatta ocean beach

Gunnamatta ocean beach  is the most well known and popular surfing beach along the Mornington Peninsula. Surfers come here from all over Australia and even internationally to surf the high swells. But beware there are rocky reefs. Not only can you surf but some very adventurous types on calm days paddle-board too. You can also walk the long stretch of exposed sandy beach, east to Fingal and Cape Schanck, and west towards Boag Rocks.

Not that we have ever indulged but there is ocean fishing due to the many deep rip holes, gutters and rocky reefs.

Swimming at these back beaches should only occur in the patrolled areas as conditions are dangerous with high swells, strong currents and hidden rocky reefs. If we are interested in swimming or going with surfer friends we use the Triggerbrothers web cam as a reference.

Interestingly enough the Triggerbrothers is a retail store selling surf gear. They’re located in Frankston but use various webcams around the peninsula and event have one up at Lorne. Pretty cool. They even provide Rye front beach conditions on the web camera.

Access to the beach is via a large car park at the end of Treumens road. The beach is patrolled during summer and school holidays.
